To contradict the title of an earlier review, this was never a ‘B’ film or co-feature, and the years away from television showings made it seem obscure, but when ABPC arranged for the screen rights, its new, sharp lag’s dialogue and the studio’s change from naval comedies and the drawing room settings made it one hot property that appeared in the national press more often than BUTTERFIELD 8.What has not been said is that this is undoubtedly the blueprint, precursor, forerunner or inspiration – whichever fits best – for Clement and LaFrenais’ PORRIDGE – and Ronnie Barker was next to step onto this prison set at Elstree when joining the supporting players on ABPC’s superb THE CRACKSMAN.Ronnie Fraser, who was being bumped up to becoming a big new (character) star on Associated British contract – and who did make it to Hollywood as one of the star line-up of FLIGHT OF THE PHOENIX and TOO LATE THE HERO, is worth the purchase, but his real turn was in ABPC’s CROOKS IN CLOISTERS, a must-have. The concept here is realist drama with a comedy spine. One feels that fifteen minutes more of comedy should have been sewn into the proceedings, as the film does seem short. But the big noises this project made in its day (forgotten now) lie solely in its new wave realism, dialogue which in the few years afterwards would become the norm.

watched this old film with my brothers and none of us are real fans of RONALD FRASER, maybe its because weve only ever seen him as a bit-part actor. Well in this he is one of the main characters and we all agreed he plays it very well. Its basically a film about all the scams and dodgies that go on in a prison kitchen, well acted and with a cracking script, this is a little know film that wont disappoint. Good quality picture and sound too.
