Robyn decodes the latest brain science into easy-to-understand principles and metaphors to help you become an expert in your child’s behavior. She reveals simple ways to help you regulate and connect with your child, with brain-, body- and sensory-based strategies to overcome day-to-day challenges. She also provides you with the knowledge to understand and regulate your own brain so that you don’t flip your lid when your child flips theirs.
Let this be your lifeline for parenting or caring for any child with baffling behaviors and hidden challenges, including kids who have experienced adversity, or with additional needs.

This is a game changer
Iâve never cried through a book like this. When I bought it I was in crisis mode as a mother and parenting in ways that I deeply regret. I just couldnât understand why I struggled to BE THERE for my daughter when she needed me most. This book teaches about emotional regulation and dysregulation. Iâm completely new to this concept so my mind was blown. Maybe others familiar with the subject wonât be â but I certainly was.I figured, if I bought this book maybe I could understand her better. And then maybe by understanding the science of it, I would have a better handle on what to do with her behavior. But this book taught me so much more. I learned that emotional dysregulation is contagious. And that one personâs emotional outbursts affect the other people involved. So instead of learning how to âfixâ my daughterâs behavior, this book taught me that with practice, I must first learn to manage my own state.Full of tools and some gut-wrenching self compassion statements that honestly are worth the price of this book 5 times over, this book speaks to our hearts where true change is possible. The tricks tips and tools are extremely valuable too, but learning about how to stay regulated and compassionate in the midst of chaos is the true driver of change. Read it till the end. You wonât be sorry.PS – the conversational writing style is what resonated with me the most. Itâs to funny to see negative reviews on the writing style of this book. You truly canât please everyone. I found her friendly, passionate tone so inviting and warm â a true delight to read. The free resources on the authorsâs page are so generously offered to support us weary parents with kids with big behaviors and vulnerable nervous systems. I feel the author she gets us, sees us and has a huge heart for us.I havenât been this impacted by a book in over a decade.

Super helpful book!
The way Robyn makes neuroscience accessible and easy to understand is truly astounding! As both an adoptive parent and a therapist, this book has completely transformed how I see people. It has helped me extend compassion not only to other adoptive parents but also to my own child, and it allowed me to finally recognize and step out of the deadlock and power struggles I was stuck in with my adopted child. This book will forever influence both my personal and professional life. I am hope to continuing to integrate its insights so I can keep my own âwatchdog brainâ from taking over in frustrating situations. Thank you for this incredible work!

Great for Therapy and Parents
I’m a children’s therapist and I loved this book! I work with a lot of kiddos who have experienced trauma and struggle with being able to regulate their feelings. Even kiddos who just struggle in general with anxiety and feeling dysregulated.Often times parents aren’t sure how to handle it and become dysregulated themselves. This book is perfect for therapists and parents to better understand how to help kiddos become regulated. It focuses on how behaviors are really a form of communication rather than a child ‘being a bad child.’ It gives parents actionable tools to use and a better understanding of the brain science. One of my favorite parts about this book is the information is really easily digestible. It makes it a quick read and provides useful terminology for moving forward. The terminology can be used with your kiddo, their teachers and even their therapist!I highly recommend this book and have recommended it to multiple of the parents that I work with.

Helped me so much with toddler tantrums/big feelings!
Man. Iâve had a crazy ride into toddlerhood & my child has very big emotions. I am truly grateful for who God made her to be and trying to break cycles that I was parented in. Sometimes it is triggering after the 5th meltdown over the day over something I feel is small. I want to do different but not really knowing where to start, nor how to make sure I am self regulated. This book has opened my heart and eyes a lot. And I am so grateful to implement these into our life!

Makes the Baffling Behaviors not so baffling
This book puts into perspective our children’s difficult behaviors and our response to them. If you’ll let her, Robyn Gobble will, through this book, help you see and meet your child’s needs and your own.

Game changer!More than a parenting book!
I have taken numerous of Robynâs classes over the years, and share lots of her posts. I belonged to her Parenting Group until just recently, and her style of teaching has helped me better understand and how to regulate Aâs behaviors as while as my own. And being honest, regulating my own behaviors when his are big and baffling is what has helped me the most.I wasnât sure what to except when I started reading, as the empathy and space that Robyn holds for you in her classes is truly amazing, and I wasnât sure how that would translate into her book, yet it did. As, I was teary eyed into the first few pages of chapter 1 because I felt seen and hopeful. And I am beholden for that in these early morning hours of being lost in my thoughts replaying yesterday and worrying about a worse case scenario future that may or may not happen. Reading this book has paused these ruminating thoughts and allowed curiosity to be reawakened.I have read numerous books on trauma and the impacts to the brain over the last 10 years, and this book takes the best parts from many of those books and makes it simpler to understand and apply. The owl, watchdog, and possum brain analogies help apply the brain science to strategies that can help get kiddos move from protection mode to connection mode. This is a book that all parents and teachers, well actually anyone and everyone should read. Even though it is written as a parenting book, it applies to every human being and can help us be curious about why adults can have big baffling behaviors as well because when we can understand the brain science, then we can see the situation differently and understand why we behave that way as well.

Loved the way each chapter is designed
Each chapter puts you in the office as the parent with this young person that needs help. Also appreciated the explanation about how the brain works.

I have a daughter with additional needs. This book has been an eye opener for me. Great insight into reasons behind behaviours and great ways to help manage them. I canât recommend this enough!! I have told many other parents about it. I have read a lot of books on strategies and supporting kids with additional need but this just makes it so easy to understand. Amazing buy. Wish I knew about it when my daughter was 2 (sheâs now 5)

This book changed my life, my daughter’s life, and my family’s life. The way the author wrote it is so honest, relatable, and compassionate. Although there are other books that talk about the same topic, Rasing Kids With Big Baffling Behaviors is the one that really helped us. Totally indispensable.

It is a book that explains very well and with the approach of owl, watch dog and opossum it also shows a way of talking to your kids about it.It has some length in between and is very American but the content is really important and good

I have so much gratitude for the person who introduced this to me. Finally, a language and an explanation that brings polyvagal theory to stressed and overwhelmed parents in a way they can grasp. This is essential reading for people working with children who have attachment trauma and/or the PDA profile of autism. The light lilt as we hear Sammieâs mom and Robyn interact in their regular sessions and slowly and gradually going deeper into making sense of behaviour. But the very best part? Itâs not just about Sammie, but about mom too! When we parents start to notice and tend to our own nervous system states our children notice. They feel less unsafe, we feel more safe and what used to be overwhelm from behaviours of dysregulation gets better.
