Very helpful information!!!
As a grandmother who adores her grandchildren but sometimes struggles to understand their behavior, I am thrilled to have found this incredibly informative book. I knew that my granddaughterâs responses to situations were not exactly normal. They were over the top to me, and the only thing that I knew to do toward a disrespectful child was spank their bottom. I also know that this approach is not a great idea at all. This book has helped me understand that my granddaughter does indeed have a problem, and she needs guidance, not spankings. It offers simple, practical advice. The straightforward explanations of how to communicate effectively and support emotional growth make me feel like I can help her through this situation.Iâm truly grateful for this resource. Itâs helped me feel more confident in my role as a grandma and a family supporter. My daughter has also read this book, and now we have a team strategy to get this behavior under control before my granddaughter hits her teenage years. I wish Iâd had this kind of guidance when I was raising my own kids, but itâs never too late to learn. If youâre part of a family navigating tricky behaviors, this book is a treasure trove of wisdom and encouragement. Itâs helped me deepen my connection with my grandchildren while fostering a happier, more peaceful family dynamic.

Helpful and easy to follow
One of the hardest things in life is to navigate your early years. There are so many challenges out there for kids to overcome. Life is difficult and this book is a great way for kids and teens to get started in the right direction. It has fantastic tips on communication, emotional health, sharing, and personal growth. It even goes into money management and household skills. It is a great book for not only teens but parents trying to raise them.

Simple and straightforward
There are some good insights shared in this book. For those looking for a place to start this is a great choice. I did find that it avoided getting to the root of the problem which usually lies with the parent and how they interact with the world. The old saying “The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.” is usually spot-on in most cases. For those rare cases where there is an actual neurological disorder I wonder how effective techniques like active listening are?

A lot of wonderful tips and suggestions for how to better approach ODD
This book gave a thorough overview about what ODD is and it also gave a lot of information about how the family of a child dealing with ODD can better manage it all. I loved the emphasis on parents staying calm, incorporating self-care, and getting a good support network around them (including support groups and/or groups of other people going through similar situations). I also liked the emphasis on mindfulness, consistency, and focusing on and celebrating small wins. Best of all, the stories the author had about children who had benefited from interventions and/or therapy who talked about what made a difference for them. This book makes you see all the potential and the hopefulness around ODD–that it can get better with time and effort, that a child with ODD can make changes and have an easier time of it (along with his/her/their family)–which is wonderful to hear. I also liked the discussion about herbs, art therapy, and music therapy–these things were things that I had not heard about before, so I really appreciated the author for bringing those things to my attention and showing me how they could be powerful aids.

Eye-Opening Book About an Often Overlooked Disorder
I picked up this book because I had never heard of this disorder and was curious about what it entails. I am unaware of any parents I know whose child has been diagnosed with this condition, but this book opened my eyes to understanding it. Before reading this book, I would have probably chalked up seeing a child displaying this behavior to him or her simply âacting out.âWhen I imagine myself as a parent of a child with ODD, this book is an invaluable, comprehensive guide. It goes through successfully raising a child with this disorder while taking into consideration the need for the parent to take care of his or her own mental and physical health. The book is a must-read for anyone who is either a parent, close friend or relative to someone whose child has been diagnosed with ODD. I would also advise others who have been untouched by ODD to read it to understand the challenges that this disorder brings. It may cause you to display more empathy when you see a parent out and about trying to address their child’s behavior when, up to this point, you had assumed it was simply a child needing to be disciplined.

This book has been a lifeline. âEach interaction⦠is an opportunity to reinforce these ties.â That quote stayed with me. Charlene Collins gives real, compassionate strategies that work – like daily check-ins, affirmations, and specific praise that truly shift the energy at home. I especially appreciated how she emphasizes consistency and emotional support, not just discipline. It made me feel less alone and more empowered as a parent. Thank you for writing with such clarity, heart, and hope. This isnât just a guide – itâs a gift. ð

This book was easy to read compared to other books on the topic. It doesn’t contain clinical speak and is much more practical in nature. Some themes that stood out to me were: practice, patience, routine, and consistency with an emphasis on the importance of these to both the child and the parent/caregiver. It also highlighted the importance of foresight: i.e., thinking about possible situations and triggers so on can take a proactive approach.
