To understand where illness is spreading in real-time, Kinsa aggregates anonymous temperatures and symptoms via Kinsa smart thermometers. Important Tips for All Temperature Readings

Always wait for three flashing lines on the display before every reading. Wait at least 15 minutes to take a reading after eating, drinking, exercising or bathing. If you or your Kinsa were outside on a cold day, wait until you are used to the new temperature before taking a reading. A person’s body temperature will fluctuate depending on the time of the day. The best method to determine your own normal temperature is to record it twice a day (early morning and late afternoon) when feeling well. The average of the two is considered your normal body temperature.

Kinsa app tracks fever readings, symptoms, diagnoses and medications for each family member Kinsa app tracks fever readings, symptoms, diagnoses and medications for each family member

Underarm Readings

Wipe armpit with a dry towel and make sure that no clothes are in the way. Place the thermometer probe in the armpit and keep your arm pressed firmly against the body. In general, a normal underarm temperature is considered 35.8°C – 37.2°C (96.5°F – 98.9°F). Also, please note that underarm readings are typically 0.6°C (1°F) lower than oral readings; this is perfectly normal. The Kinsa app automatically takes underarm readings into account when calculating the severity of the fever, but it does not artificially add that 0.6°C (1°F) to the temperature reading.

Oral Readings

For oral readings, always place the probe tip of the thermometer in your mouth’s heat pocket – under the tongue at the back of the mouth. Keep your mouth closed while the temperature reading is being taken. The temperature in one spot of the mouth can be very different from another so always put the probe tip in the same heat pocket for every reading. A normal oral temperature is considered 36.1°C – 37.7°C (97.0°F – 99.9°F).

Rectal Readings

Consider applying a bit of petroleum jelly on the QuickCare tip to make it easier to insert. Place your baby on a firm surface, either on her stomach or back, with legs lifted up to the chest (think diaper-changing position). Insert the probe tip about ½ inch inside. Never insert the probe past the metal tip. Stop if you meet any resistance. Hold QuickCare between two fingers while keeping your hand cupped around your baby’s bottom (you might need to squeeze the cheeks together to hold it in place). Remember, rectal temperatures tend to be about 0.3°C (0.5°F) higher than oral and 0.6°C (1°F) higher than underarm readings. In general, a normal rectal temperature is considered 36.4°C – 37.9°C (97.5°F – 100.3°F). If you’d like to verify your results, be sure to wait 5 minutes first for the most accurate second reading.

    More useful than you imagined
I’ve had this thermometer for years and am replacing it due to my dog chewing it to bits …..I love this thermometer for so many reasons. The thermometer itself is soft in the mouth and therefore comfortable to have under the tongue. It is fast and easy to read. The application that it works in conjunction with is something I didn’t know I wanted, but now do not want to be without. Tracking my temperature over time and keeping a history of my temperature, as well as giving me prompts about my well-being, which it also stores, is useful to track in case I have to go to the doctor and report on the progress of an illness. I also like that it tells me what the illness trends are in my area for flu/Covid and gives me suggestions as to home measures to take or when it’s time to consider calling a doctor. I wish I had this when my kids were little. I’ve given one to each of them, as adults, and they find it very useful as well.

    The Best and Easiest
This is the very best thermometer that any parent could ever wish for. It is quick (8 seconds), efficient, fun (it shows a little stuffed elephant during the 8 seconds) and it is so much more than a thermometer. Besides saving your child’s temp, you can also add all their symptoms from a list that is provided for you. This list will help you determine if your child has a cold or the flu. And it will recommend if your child needs to see a doctor or if their cold/flu just needs to run its course. It’s Great for children and adults alike. I highly recommend it for everyone.

    5/5 stars
I recently bought this digital thermometer, and I’m honestly blown away by how much it does beyond just taking a temperature. The readings are super fast and accurate and the display is large and easy to read. What really sets it apart, though, is the integration with a connected app that shows trending illnesses in my area.

Exactly what I was hoping for, a decent thermometer the records readings onto my phone
(Updated Apr 14 – will leave posting for history, in case anybody has same issue)I picked this Kinsa over the other two models as it appears to be the most compatible with the phones moving forward.(being it connects bluetooth vs aux audio plug)I loaded the app, and it said it found the QuickCare device. This was followed by the screen going to “UPd”, which after looking through the app meant it was updating the firmware on the QuickCare thermometer. The app shows a progress bar, and about 2 minutes into the firmware update, I get “Connection Failed”. The thermometer drops the “UPd”, but soon displays it again, and the app shows its trying to load the firmware update again. “Connection Failed” I try it several more times, and find that it does not always fail at the same place on the progress bar.The CR2032 battery it came with showed “Low” on the app, so I replaced it with a new battery…. twice. Each time the battery showed that it was good, and after getting “UPd” and trying to install the firmware again, the battery then shows “Low”. I would say I tried to update the firmware nearly twenty (20) times.I then went to the Kinsa support website and created a ticket (#30797) explaining all this. I did this on Apr 8, at 6:22 AM.Kinsa responded on Apr 8, at 8:22 AM.”Your ticket 30797 has been received and is being reviewed by our support staff. We make every effort to respond to all requests within 2 business hours.”Today is Apr 11… Wednesday, and no response. I’ll give it a few more days, and if I can’t resolve the issue, I’ll have to return it. (I hate doing returns)Apr 12: Kinsa contacted me and will be sending out a replacement, updated to the newest firmware. Will post results and update rating as appropriate.Apr 13: Received replacement. Paired to my phone and saw that the firmware was not 1.0.1, but 1.0.3. Within the software I selected the first unit and “forgot” it and tested the new unit. Besides myself, I added my wife and grandson. Tested all three of us and verified the results using two other thermometers we have. Everything looks good.Apr 14: Okay, will up my review. I have to chock it up to I just got a bad unit. Kinsa handled it pretty well, and I’ll be dropping the defective one in the mail back to them. (they handled the shipping both ways)I really like the recorded history, as in the past when somebody was sick, it will be nice to see the previous readings. I expect this to become my default temperature reader.

The app makes it worth it!
The app, so far, is amazing! It was (1) easy to set up and get working, (2) keeps track of all previous temps and symptoms, (3) allows you to keep track of multiple people on the app, and (4) links to basic recommendations based on the temp and symptoms. For example, it gave me a list of what I could do to help my child (who had an ear ache) and what I should be on the look out for.The thermometer, on the other hand, was a little difficult for my 9 yr old to get used to. However, this is probably simply because I have never used an oral thermometer on her – she’s used to the “Swipe across the forehead” type. I’m sure she will get the hang of it, but be prepared for a little bit of a learning curve on your child’s part.Overall, this would be an AWESOME baby shower gift for when the child is old enough.
