Hundreds of thousands of clinicians and graduate students have relied on this text–now significantly revised with more than 50% new material–to learn the fundamentals of cognitive behavior therapy (CBT). Leading expert Judith S. Beck demonstrates how to engage patients, develop a sound case conceptualization, plan individualized treatment, structure sessions, and implement core cognitive, behavioral, and experiential techniques. Throughout the book, extended cases of one client with severe depression and another with depression, anxiety, and borderline personality traits illustrate how a skilled therapist delivers CBT and troubleshoots common difficulties. Adding to the third edition’s utility, the companion website features downloadable worksheets and videos of therapy sessions.
New to This Edition Chapter on the therapeutic relationship. Chapter on integrating mindfulness into treatment. Presents recovery-oriented cognitive therapy (CT-R)–which emphasizes clients’ aspirations, values, and positive adaptation–alongside traditional CBT. Pedagogical features: clinical tips, reflection questions, practice exercises, and videos at the companion website. New case examples featuring clients with more complex problems. Demonstrates how to integrate strategies from other modalities, such as acceptance and commitment therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy. See also Recovery-Oriented Cognitive Therapy for Serious Mental Health Conditions, by Aaron T. Beck, Paul Grant, Ellen Inverso, Aaron P. Brinen, and Dimitri Perivoliotis, the authoritative presentation of the cutting-edge CT-R approach.

Informative easy read
Graduate student of mental health counseling. Book reads like a couple of case studies, showing CBT techniques as applied to real life clients.

Clear guide to CBT
While I am by no means an expert, I have long been skeptical of (and frankly disappointed by) CBT approaches. Author Judith Beck (daughter of Aaron Beck) lays out a great overview of CBT that gives any practitioner an encouraging understanding of how CBT can take a strengths perspective and go beyond the stereotypical âyour thoughts are wrong; we must change themâ view of someoneâs process. I will never be a CBT-only or even mainly-CBT practitioner, but there is certainly a place for it in clinical practice and itâs hard to imagine being a good clinician without a foundational understanding of it!

THE resource for new practitioners.
Comprehensive, easy to read and digest, lots of examples and verbatim discussions with clients, and a huge pdf file of client handouts and worksheets (since one of the major tenets of CBT is that clients must do the work, and most of the work is done outside of session).

Writing and marking in the book
The book was in good condition but I paid for a new book and this one has writing and markings in the book. Itâs not much but I was charged for a new book not the used book price.

Pretty much the standard text on the subject.
Seems to have comperhensive coverage of the subject matter.

Easy to get through
I had to buy this for a graduate course, it was very easy to get through quickly and gave sufficient information on techniques, so they could be easily applied.

Enlightening Book
Purchased book for personal use. Enjoyed learning a methodical way of re-structuring my thinking. Have read the first three chapters and have successfully incorporated learning into my daily living and into my relationships. Thank you for making this book available.

This book is an excellent resource on Cognitive Behavior Therapy for both therapists and their patients. CBT is one of the most widely tested psychotherapeutic modalities for treating a wide variety of psychological disorders. It helps to be educated in its fundamentals, since everyone’s life has crises where they can benefit from counsel. And who better to learn it from other than Judith Beck who was exposed to her father Aaron Beck’s work from a very young age and is the leading authority on CBT right now.The central premise of CBT is simple: dysfunctional thinking lies at the heart of many psychological disturbances, and by modifying our thinking, we can overcome these disturbances. CBT consists of a slew of techniques and insights based on this idea. This book is only a primer in the technique; the real learning will come from mulling over its ideas, and helping yourself and others based on these teachings. As simple as the core idea is, the book nevertheless contains a great deal of information that must be digested over a period of time.A highly recommended read!
