Expensive BUT Worth It
PRICE: This thing is expensive. What do you expect? It’s the same type as they use in doctors offices. I don’t think it’s SO expensive that it is out of your price range. If you’re even considering this thermometer, it means that you have had some pretty serious need of it. Read on, friend.PERSONAL NEED: I needed this thing because I have to monitor my temperature constantly. I’ve had temperature spikes that have sent me to the ER and with all of our old store-bought thermometers, the temperature was never right. How did we know? We brought them in with us to the ER and compared. Ours was off by 3-4 degrees each time, which can be a HUGE difference to a sick person like myself.THERMOMETER: This thermometer is sturdy. It came with a small box of probe covers, although I ordered a large case of them as well. Truly, I’m in awe and in love. It’s accurate every time. And now, when I bring in my log to my doctors, there’s no doubt on their part of the temperatures, because this product is one they have their offices as well. I’m sure that this thermometer will be with us until the day it dies, which I’m told is years and years and years from now, if it is well taken care of.BOTTOM LINE: If you need an ACCURATE, DURABLE, and SAFE (probe covers are so smart) thermometer, then this is the thermometer for you. Welch Allyn make quality products, so the price should not be a surprise. I believe that you get what you pay for, and I feel that this holds true with this thermometer. I couldn’t be happier and I would not go back to change my mind about ordering it. In fact, if/when this thermometer dies, I plan on buying another one from this maker (that is hopefully available on Amazon, because I love Amazon).

Worth it.
I don’t see how anybody takes their temperature any more since digital became the standard. I have guarded my mercury thermometer like a gold ingot since they went out of production. Any digital thermometer will give you four different readings for four different tries, one right after the other. And I don’t care if it’s a forehead thermometer, or an ear thermometer, or ….whatever. They just cannot be consistent. So when we took my grandson to the doctor, I made a point of noticing what they used to take his temperature. It was this very same Welch Allyn thermometer. I did a little research and decided this is probably the only type of thermometer that actually works – accurately and consistently – besides my mercury thermometer. When it arrived I ran my own series of tests to compare it for accuracy, and I can state unequivocally that it matches the accuracy of a mercury thermometer, which is unquestionable. It is expensive, yes, but without the level of accuracy you get from this thermometer, what’s the point of even taking your temperature. And with kids, do you want to know if they are spiking at 102 degrees – or just somewhere within 3 degrees plus or minus that number? There just is no price you can put on believing in the accuracy of the temperature reading when you are making important decisions about your child’s illness.

Unit works perfectly – Very accurate
WelchAllyn 690 SureTemp arrived non-functioning/defective. The unit powers on for 5 seconds and then shuts down. Display stays at 00.0 no matter where probe is placed. The “mode” button is not working. Too bad b/c i’m in need of an operational thermometer since my wife has the flu. I called WelchAllyn Tech Support to see if there was some kind of reset. We ran through the procedure but it did not help. WelchAllyn technician said it is defective and to return it to seller. Unfortunately i have not heard back from Maxcare to exchange unit. I suppose i’ll return it but i hope they don’t charge me a restocking fee? I just want what i paid for…UPDATE 1/19/2018Amazon reached out to me and resolved problem with new unit. This is why I will continue to use Amazon.THANKS AMAZON!! – Another happy customer

if you need to use a thermometer often, this is the one to get
My wife has some health issues and needs to monitor her temperature regularly. We have gone through all of the cheap digital thermometers we could find, I finally got sick of having the variance in readings(some were off by as much as .5 degrees!) I decided to find the best one I could get. this is it. the same one found in hospitals and doctor’s offices, the 690 is accurate, fast and reliable. It also has a history, which makes reporting to your doctor if you need to easy to do. if you only need to take your temp once in a while, don’t bother with this, but if you even have to take it weekly, I would say this is the only one to consider. make sure you get extra probe covers and replace the battery regularly but otherwise using the model could not be faster or easier.

Not working properly.
Welch allyn is great and all but the one i received, It kept skipping over the rectal portion. And of course, it has to be a problem after the return window is closed. Very disappointed that something so expensive would have an error within its first year of using.

Accurate and easy to use
We bought this thermometer after getting mixed results with the “$10 pharmacy” thermometers. Using two different brands of thermometers, we saw variances of over a degree between them. The Welch Allyn brand is used by our pediatrician so we opted to go with what we believe is a trusted brand and have been very satisfied. This isn’t a cheap thermometer but we feel confident in it’s results and longevity. Happy with our purchase.
